The city of Assisi is known for being the home of San Francesco and Santa Chiara. For this reason, after the discovery of their bodies, in 1818 and 1850, Assisi became a privileged destination for pilgrimages; religious tourism gave a strong increase to the rebirth of the local economy.

During the Second World War, in the period following 8 September 1943 and the German occupation, Assisi was literally invaded by refugees, including over 300 Jews. The bishop Msgr. Giuseppe Placido Nicolini transforms Assisi into one of the main centers of the Italian civil resistance to the Holocaust. Disguised as friars and nuns, hidden in the basements and cellars, camouflaged among the displaced, with false documents, the Jews who took refuge in Assisi are protected by a vast network of solidarity that also extends to other areas of Umbria and has contacts, also through the cyclist Gino Bartali, with the Delasem resistance and financing centers in Liguria and Tuscany. The task is difficult. Among the refugees there are women, children, the elderly, the sick, who need care and assistance for their daily needs. A school is even organized where Jewish children can receive Jewish religious education. Thanks also to the complicity of the German colonel Valentin Müller, who will declare Assisi a hospital free zone, no Jew will be deported from Assisi.

An extraordinary collection of testimonies dedicated to the extraordinary and ordinary jubilees, which took place from 1900 to 2000. The Spring Festival of Assisi, an event that has lasted for centuries and offers songs, music, serenades under the balconies with a very strong popular participation. The event takes its name from the period in which it takes place, that is, the beginning of May. Since 1954, on the initiative of some intellectuals from Assisi, a dispute has arisen that evokes the times of calendimaggio. The two sides return to challenge each other in our day in a heated but courteous contest of singing, acting and scenographic creations. The parts are none other than the two territorial units, which evoke the territories of the Rivers and the Nepis, into which the city is ideally divided.

Assisi Underground

The guided tour of the Roman Domus in Assisi, where the oldest history of the city is hidden, the one that best tells its past as a colony of the Empire.
